A bus carrying the Delaware State University women’s lacrosse team was stopped on I-95 and searched for drugs. None were found, but the incident led to a firestorm of attention.

SAVANNAH, Ga. —

It has been one year since a commercial bus carrying the Delaware State University women’s lacrosse team was stopped by the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies searched the vehicle and teams’ luggage looking for drugs as the team, coaches and chaperones watched.
“Anybody on the bus smoke marijuana at all?” a deputy is heard on his body worn camera asking the team.

Deputies found neither drugs nor paraphernalia. But the incident created a national controversy as a lacrosse player published the story in Delaware State University’s student newspaper.

The incident created a firestorm of attention and allegations of racial profiling which Sheriff Bill Bowman denies.
